Democrats, Guns and Abortion

In today's column headlined "Republicans, Guns and Abortion," the NYT's Gail Collins writes…
(T)here’s currently far more concern in this country over the right to buy weapons than there is over a woman’s right to control her own body.
But is this true?

Certainly there are a lot of people who are deeply concerned about the the right of their fellow Americans to buy guns. Many of them actually work at the New York Times where Gail Collins works. They are so concerned that they recently ran a front page editorial (the first one since 1920) bemoaning the fact so many people exercise their right, guaranteed by the Second Amendment to buy firearms.

Are they more concerned about the right to buy guns than the right of women to control their own bodies. I don't know. But they seem awfully concerned about that "right" too.

So do a lot of other liberals and Democrats, including the President of the United States. He seems very concerned about the people's right to buy weapons. So concerned that he wants to curb that right, if not take it away altogether. Obviously, Gail Collins and Barack Obama would rather live in a country that has no constitutional right to own and bear arms. Like Australia. But they are not concerned enough about it to actually move there. So they settle for hectoring others and urging voters to elect politicians who agree with them.

But the stupid voters refuse. They like their right to buy guns. And the more the Obamas and the Collinses of the world hector, the more guns Americans go out and buy. Funny how that works.

As for a woman's right to control there own bodies, almost everyone is for that.

Except Muslims.

What a lot of people are against is abortion. And even more people are against late-term abortions.

Collins and the president would like it if people who are against abortion stopped concerning themselves about it. They seem to believe they should just pipe down and, if not agree with them, at least shut up and stop voting for people who think abortion is bad.

Anyway, we believe there is a lot of concern for both abortion rights and gun rights in this country. There are a lot of pro-gun people who are also pro-choice. We've talked to some. They don't a give a crap if some woman they don't know in New York City wants to kill her baby before it's born. They especially don't care if the woman is black or some other minority. They're pretty libertarian on the matter. Then there are others who think abortion is morally wrong and shouldn't be legal at all.

Same with the anti-gun people. They say because guns are dangerous it would be better if fewer people had them. They know that most gun people can't be talked out of having their guns so they  want stronger laws that discourage gun ownership. Just like the anti-abortion people want stronger laws and restrictions to discourage abortion. Seems fair to us.

But if Collins wants more abortions rights and less gun rights in this country she and her ilk are going to have to be a lot more persuasive in their arguments. Asserting that Americans aren't showing the proper amount of concern for the issues that matter to her is hardly likely to change a lot of minds.

There were like 33,000 gun deaths in America last year. There were about 1 million abortions. From following the news, we'd say Americans are concerned about both numbers. Liberals more about death by gun than death by abortion.

If that concerns you, get over it! Or suffer the wrath of another Gail Collins' column.
The horror! The horror!
